Bunker Project Update - April '08
In the spring of 2006 the Navy storage bunker known as N-9 began its face-lift. Three scouts from Kingston’s BSA Troop 4480 worked together to transform the bunker into a focal point for the park.
Colby was interested in the history aspect. He researched the use of N-9. The result of his research is printed on a sign at the site. Colby also created a memorial garden with two benches. Upon completing his phase of the project Colby earned Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts.
Also on the quest for Eagle is Tim. Tim is working on access to the bunker. The loading dock area of the bunker needed a ramp built. Trees were removed and a road was built up to the loading dock. A concrete handicap ramp was installed up to the bunker level. To complete his phase Tim will be installing handrails. At the top of the ramp is Colby’s sign overlooking the garden.
The loading area of the bunker was Dan’s phase of the project. The iron doors and concrete walls were rusting and in disrepair. Graffiti covered the walls and debris littered the area. Dan has cleared the area, scraped and painted the doors, repaired cracked concrete and painted the walls. As soon as consistent good weather arrives Dan will continue his phase.
Each boy needed to show leadership as part of the Eagle Scout requirement. To date each has worked with park officials, FOW members, historians, concrete companies, landscapers, carpenters, various tradesmen, scout officials, parents, friends and other scouts to help them succeed.
When each phase of the project has been completed there will be an open house with Navy guests of honor. The date is to be announced upon project completion.
